I've often been forced to ponder the meaning of civilization, whether or not I live in one, and whether not such a thing has ever actually existed, except in theory, or at best within certain frameworks of a larger society that otherwise frankly could not give a damn. Many studies have been done to determine whether or not people would obey simple rules of civility if they did not feel, at least at some level, compelled to do so: whether by a stern parent standing by, that policeman on the corner, the minister at church, a teacher at school, or a larger government backed by an army. Or even simply that someone is watching. We do, in short, what we were taught, because we must, because it is the rule, or the law, or the right thing to do. But would we do them otherwise? Most of us would like to think we would. This image represents perhaps the oldest, if not most powerful symbol in the world: the so-called 'All-Seeing Eye.' Whose eye, exactly, is this, and what is it they see? The most obvious and common assumption, of course, is that it sees all and therefore, presumably, it is the eye of God. But which God? The earliest representations of this symbol were the seven manifestations of the Eye of Horus, in ancient Egypt. Sometimes depicted as a falcon, Horus could literally see all and was considered by his Rosicrucian and Masonic descendants as probably the original named God in the human panoply. Later versions, adopting the pyramid, and later on a simple representational triangle, all have their historical basis in this original Eye. Dear God (or Allah) Since I think nobody reads these posts except you and me anyway, I hope you don't mind a bit of frank discussion here, and I do have a few questions. First off, are you two the same Deity, or like, brothers or something? Possibly even twins? I ask, because both your (God's) Son's followers and those of your (Allah's) Prophet Mohammed all insist there is only one God, so which one of you would that be, or are you maybe Siamese Twins? That could explain a lot. I'm also wondering about Jehovah. Where did he go? Is he maybe way over in the far side of the Universe busy making new galaxies and stuff? That is a long trip, which may be why we haven't heard from him for a while. (If you hear from Him, tell Him I do love those Hubble pictures, by the way.) Was that your idea?
